New functions in 6.1
Liquid Edition Update from 6.0 to 6.1: Project compatibility
Projects from 6.1 cannot be opened in 6.0. When 6.0 Projects are opened, they are converted to 6.1 (as is also true of Projects from even earlier versions).
As a general rule, we recommend that you complete Projects in the same version in which they were begun.
For users upgrading from Adobe Premiere and Pinnacle Studio
Users changing from Premiere or Studio to Liquid can select special keyboard and toolbar layouts. The functions are then assigned to the usual keys and the software interface offers a reduced selection of the most important functions.
Select these configurations from the login menu (Exit Liquid > …log on as a different user > Studio User/Premiere User).
DVD export: Dolby Digital Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1® (Consumer)
Liquid is equipped with Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator®, a surround sound encoder that lets you generate true 5+1-channel audio that can be burned to a DVD. In contrast to Dolby Prologic, for example, Dolby Digital 5.1 separates all audio channels during encoding and decoding, which means the full spatial sound experience is maintained in playback (provided you have suitable equipment and the appropriate speaker configuration).
Dolby Digital Stereo – as DD 5.1 – also encodes in Dolby AC-3 technology but as two-channel stereo rather than surround sound. This format can be combined with Pinnacle’s Matrix Surround to create a virtual spatial impression.
These two options can be found on the Destination tab of the DVD/(S)VCD Export from Liquid. Dolby Digital Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 can be combined with the VOB, DVD Image and Elementary Stream destination formats.
We recommend that you visit the Dolby website at www.dolby.com where you will find extensive information on surround sound and licensing issues.
Refresh media
Imported clips, such as graphics, are not automatically refreshed on the Timeline if you subsequently edit them in an external program. Refresh media refreshes a modified clip to reflect the latest version.
This function can be found in the tool library for the Timeline on the Special tab (right-click > Customize > ...). The symbol is a rectangle encircled by an arrow.
Realtime FX: Key frame functions
A. Show keyframes of other effects
(in the effect shortcut menu) Shows all the Key Frames for all the effects applied to the same clip. The Key Frames for the current effect are diamond-shaped, while the others appear as triangles. A tooltip identifies the particular effect to which they relate.
When you simultaneously hold down the Ctrl key, the Goto next/previous Key Frame commands also take into account the “other” Key Frames, i.e. the Playline jumps from triangle to triangle.
B. Set Keyframes for all Parameters
(Options tab > Key Frames). If activated, all the parameters of an effect are assigned a Key Frame at the same position of the Playline. This is helpful when you want processes to start or end synchronously.
Replace timeline clip using drag & drop
To replace a clip on the Timeline with another clip, hold down the Ctrl key and drag the “replacement clip” directly onto the clip to be replaced (not onto the Track above it). The mouse pointer changes to a symbolic representation of this replacement.
However, two conditions apply: The replacement clip must come from a Rack (not from the Timeline) and must be at least as long as the clip to be replaced.
If necessary, the replacement clip is trimmed (at the end); its mark-in is not affected. The total length of the Sequence remains the same.
Fullscreen (Master Viewer, Source Viewer)
The video inlay of the Master Viewer and Source Viewer can be set to the size of the monitor. The tool button can be found in the tool libraries for the Source and Master Viewers on the Special tab (right-click > Customize > ...). The button has a small and large rectangle with an arrow pointing upward.
While the inlay fills the entire screen, you can control playback with the keyboard (e.g. press the Spacebar to start or stop) and scrub with the mouse.
Press Esc to exit fullscreen mode.
Dual monitor systems: The fullscreen display appears on the monitor that displays the Source and Master Viewers.
Delete from Playline position to the next/previous edit
Two Timeline editing functions: After positioning the Playline on a clip, click one of these buttons to create a gap (Overwrite Style/red) or to close the gap immediately by shifting the clips (Film Style/yellow).
The area deleted extends to the next or previous edit (mark-out or mark-in). This function affects clips on active Tracks. It cannot be used to delete beyond gaps.
The tool buttons can be found in the Timeline tool library on the Edit tab (right-click > Customize > ...).
Insert audio/video clips separately on tracks (using drag & drop)
This is now the standard method in V 6.1: If you drag a clip with video and audio A1..A4 or S1/S2 to the Timeline, the video and audio clips are imported separately. Mappings must be enabled. Example:
Drag a VA1A2 clip (stereo) to the Track labeled V in the Track Header.
As soon as the clip is positioned on the Track, the outline of the associated audio clip appears on the track beneath labeled S1. In the case of a mono clip, two clips would appear on the Tracks labeled A1 and A2.
If you import the clip to a Track that is not labeled V, the video and audio remain grouped.
If you do not want this to occur automatically, activate Insert Grouped in the header (the column with the Insert Arrow).
32-bit floating point audio: More dynamics, no clipping
Liquid 6.1 can process audio data internally in 32-bit floating point mode. On the practical level, this means better sound (especially for softer recordings or passages) and a greater dynamic range, without the possibility of the signal being clipped. When controlling the recording process (e.g. in the Logging Tool), you can go to the 0-dB limit without having to consider the amount of headroom.
This setting can be found in Audio Settings (Edit > Control Panel > User).
Logging Tool: Edit clip names
By clicking a button in the Logging Tool, you can switch directly to clip editing mode. The icon is a small letter “a” with an insert cursor, and can be found in the Logging Tool’s tool library (right-click toolbar and select Customize > Special tab). Tip: Assign this function to a key (Edit > Control Panel > Keyboard).
Refresh project views
When multiple users are editing the same Project, it’s important to keep track of the situation. Clicking the Refresh Project Views button updates the view in the Project window. You can then see, for example, that a coworker has added or removed clips from a Project.
The icon (two semicircular arrows) is located in the Project window toolbar next to the shortcut menu icon and is enabled only if the Project is being shared.
Call XSend/XReceive from the keyboard
You can also call the individual XReceive and XSend modules from the keyboard. This option is located under Edit > Control Panel > Keyboard Settings. On the upper left, activate Global Shortcuts and Global Shortcuts active (checkmarks visible). Then, in the list on the upper right, activate the Desktop option. Below you will see the entries XSend 1 to 6 and XReceive1 to 6.
The sequence corresponds to the sequence in the XReceive and XSend menus. For example, XSend1 = QuickTime Player, XSend2 = AfterEffects, if these are the first and second lines in the XSend menu.
Exception for XReceive: Counting begins below the Use existing XReceive.ini option, i.e. (for example), starting with Sony XDCAM.
Note: Extended XReceive options are part of Liquid’s Broadcast option
